Clinical Characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus Infection

Abstract
The incidence of Vibrio vulnificus infection, one of the most fatal infections in Korea, was not reduced. Nineteen cases were diagnosed by blood and/or bulla culture in recent two years(1991 and 1992) at Chonnam National University Hospital. We
compared
their clinical and epidemiological features with those of previously reported cases in Korea. All of 19 cases occurred on June to October. The mean age of the patients was 53.6 years; male-to-female was 18 to 1. On admission, septicemia was
present
in
all patients, 10 of whom also exhibited skin lesions. The illness was preceded by ingestion of raw or undercooked sea food in 15 patients. All patients had underlying diseases; liver disease were the most common and one case of aplastic anemia
was
noted. The overall fatality was 63%(12/19): 73% in 1991 and 50% in 1992. Vibrio vulnificus was most commonly isolate from bulla and all isolates were susceptible to almost all antibiotics but oolistin. No signficant differences were noted in
clinical
characteristics and epidemiology between the present and previously reported cases.
